History
of Reiki
Dr. Mikao Usui, founder of Usui Reiki
Reiki is believed to have
begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. Seers in the Orient studied
energies and developed a system of sounds and symbols for universal
healing energies. Various healing systems, which crossed many different
cultures, emerged from this single root system. Unfortunately, the
original source itself was forgotten.
Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese
Christian educator in Kyoto, Japan, rediscovered the root system in
the mid- to late 1800's. He began an extensive twenty-one-year study
of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders.
He also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit).
He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly
to the human body and nervous system which activate the universal
life energy for healing.
Usui then underwent a
metaphysical experience and became empowered to use these sounds and
symbols to heal. He called this form of healing Reiki and taught it
throughout Japan until his death around 1893.
The tradition was passed
through several grandmasters of reiki such as Dr. Chujiro Hyashi,
Hawayo Takata, and Phyllis Lei Furumoto.
There are many forms of
Reiki being practiced now. The two principal ones are: "the Usui
System of Natural Healing" and "the Radiance Technique."
The Usui System of Natural
Healing balances and strengthens the body's energy, promoting its
ability to heal itself.
Reiki is useful in treating
serious illnesses as well as others. Examples are: sports injuries,
cuts, burns, internal diseases, emotional disorders, and stress-related
illnesses.
Reiki was introduced to
the Western world in the mid-1970's. Since then its use has spread
dramatically worldwide.

Reiki: What It
Is and How It Works
Reiki is pronounced Ray-Key.
Rei means universal and refers to the spiritual dimension and the
soul. Ki means the vital life force energy which flows through all
that is alive.
When these Japanese characters are combined the present the concept
of “universal life-force energy.”
Reiki is “universal”
energy. Therefore, it is safely used at any time - any place. It expresses
the quality of “unconditional” rather than “conditional.”
Reiki practitioners channel
energy in a particular pattern to heal and harmonize. Unlike other
healing therapies based on the premise of a human energy field, reiki
seeks to restore order to the body whose vital energy has become unbalanced.
Reiki energy has several
basic effects: it brings about deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages,
detoxifies the system, provides new vitality in the form of healing
universal life energy, and increases the vibrational frequency of
the body.
Reiki is not a religion.
It beholds no doctrines, creeds or contraindications to the Universal
Laws of Consciousness and Love. No matter where the person may be
at a certain point in their life, Reiki will harmonize and embrace
their philosophical center point, adding to it the Divine Presence.
The Reiki Master (or practitioner)
simply places her hands on the client and allows the energy to flow
through the individual. It fills the practitioner’s body first
and then flows out the heart through the practitioner’s hands
into the client.
It is an extremely powerful
healing energy and is one of the few forms of healing that can be
used to heal oneself.
Reiki will either give
unto or take away the proper amount of energy to balance the Mind,
Body, and Spirit. It has been known to affect the chemical structure
of the body, helping to rebuild muscles, nerves, bone structure, and
regenerating organs. It has also provided energy to balance and strengthen
the spine. In fact, it is believed that it can change anything that
needs to be changed within the physical and etheric organism, as long
as it is for the Highest Good of the individual.
Reiki healing is a pure
energy form. When it is combined with the sincere desire of the client,
who is willing to effect a cleansing within their emotional and spiritual
consciousness, a total healing occurs.
We must remember that
the energy of the God-Force is neutral and waits positive, productive
empowerment by the client. The practitioner plays an instrumental
part in transformation, and yet, ultimately, it is up to the client
to manifest harmony and balance in their life.
The practitioner is a
channel and must not allow Ego to desire the client to be well. A
practitioner must be a clear vessel through which the Reiki ray flows.
This allows the Highest Soul Purpose to be the outcome of the session.
The Reiki Principles
Just for
today, I will not anger.
Just for today, I will let go of worry.
Today, I will count my many blessings.
Today, I will do my work honestly.
Today, I will be kind to every living creature.
The Reiki principles are intended as guidelines for higher consciousness
growth.
